(interior of jule’s therpist’s office, december 2004)
“I’m thinking of getting a dog.”
“That might be good for you, Jules. good company for you while you work at home. are you going to be stayi….”
“I am staying. if I don’t have the actual…”
“Jules, can we work on something here. a ground rule of sorts. I need you to give me heads-up before you address that night. so that we can talk about medicine or we could put you under hypnosis. I really worried that…”
“Jack called me last night. is that safe? he said he had news about the case. the case that’s gone cold.”
“Jules, can he come in with you. I am not sure….”
Jules just sat there looking down.
“Jules. I know you don’t like rules. But we need to have a structure.”
“I think you’re right about Abby. I had a dream last night that it was her I saw on the fire escape that night. she had blood dripping from her hands and looked in on us in bed.”
a chill went up doctor mann’s spine at hearing this. she has always thought it was abby and was actually trying to get up her courage to address it with Jules, knowing she needed to stay out of Jute’s process of discovering on her own.
they both jumped at Jule’s cellphone ringing just then.
Jules knew it was abby without looking, she always had this way of calling her at the exact moment Jules was working something out about Abby. it was creepy. letting it go to voicemail was nothing new she was making a habit of it lately.
“Jules, let’s talk about that letter now. You could put it in the mail tomorrow.”
picturing her life without another person who has been with her for such a big chunk of her life felt so….empty…..
Jules started crying. she just couldn’t imagine having nothing to do with Abby but she was also scared about her dream and scared about the sinking suspicion she had that abby could be crazy enough to be….to have….but how could…surely not on her own….
“did I ever tell you that abby came onto jack one night when she and bobby were having problems. and she told him she was jealous of what jesse and I had. jack was so grossed out he nearly pushed her clear off the bed. they were at our mutual friend’s house and both drunk. jack always disliked abby and would always tell me he didn’t like how she treated jesse. you know that the ba…..you know jack was the don….did I…”
“Jules, I am going to have to ask you to stop right there. we are out of time and, once again, you started to talk about.”
jules stared at her shoes blankly.
“right, out of time, got it, check, here.”
and she was up and out the door again.
doctor mann had started scheduling Jules as her final patient because she was really worn from the heaviness of their sessions and what Jules was going through. It’s hard to help when you are depleted. as she made her notes in Jule’s file she was wondering back to what she was saying about the baby….and it hit her….jack was the diner for the baby. wow. abby knew that and tried to…..
without thinking more about it, doctor mann dialed her friend in the county DA’s office.
“hey, I know it’s been a long time. how’s stephanie? yeah, being divorced isn’t so hot around the holidays. hey, do you have any contacts working homicide these days. there’s a case from a few months ago in brooklyn that I would really love to….I don’t know….it’s about one of my patients. you do? oh great. what’s his name?”
