jules and jesse
“I just don’t really like dances like this. you know I feel uncomfortable when all of the jocks line up and want to ask me to slow dance. it’s boring, abby. I wish I could help with the music or something fun like that.”
“jules, just play my wing woman one more time. I really think jack, bobby and tuck will be there together and you can hang with jack and tuck while I try to get bobby’s attention. I am never the center of attention at these events! please, jules! you know jack mentioned having a sister who was trying to revive the old women’s lacrosse team. jules, women’s lacrosse? maybe she’s cute. jules?”
jules was distractedly thinking about the sister jack mentioned having and she wondered….
“jules! did you hear anything I said? yo jules!”
jules wraps her arms around jesse’s waist and whispers in her ear “come to new york with me?”
jesse flushes bright red and starts tearing up. “babe, you would never be able to stop me from coming to new york with you.”
at this jesse spun around and started kissing an eager jules awaiting her.
“besides, radio station chicks are hot and you don’t think I am going to let you loose on those glamorous new york city babes, do you?’
“hey, what did I interrupt, you two??” abby chuckled as she asked.
simultaneously, they both grinned and said, “abby we have some news!”
abby’s heart sank but she didn’t let on.
“hey marcarena” blared into jules’ left ear and she passed the speaker on the way to the hallway where the music room was. her ears were ringing and she lost her sense of space bumping square into someone walking the opposite way down the hallway. she looked up into the most gentle and beautiful light brown eyes…
“now, where do you think you’re going, young lady?’
julie’s heart raced in her chest and he knees felt all wobbly. she couldn’t think of a way to explain that she wanted to escape into the music room and check out the music collection from the radio station. she couldn’t think of much else but…
“my brother is back there if you want….”
her perfect teeth and smile….her olive skin….
“i”m jessica, and you are???”
“julie. jules. my friends. you can. jules.”
“well jules. then I am, for you and you only, jesse.”
“I can’t let you go. I won’t stop holding you. what if…”
jesse put her finger over jules’ mouth just then as the news continued to play the footage of the towers on fire and their eventual drop. the sound was down because it was nearly midnight and they just couldn’t listen anymore….after hours of….
jules’ phone rang just then. phones hadn’t really fully come back yet, but a couple of calls from her mom and jack had gotten through over the past few hours. she was grateful to talk to anyone who was able to patch through.
as jules said a weak hello, jesse motioned her down right against her on their couch and pulled her legs up on top of hers on one of their yet unpacked boxes from chicago.
“no, I still haven’t heard from bobby, abby. no. of course. no sign of them yet. yeah, I think calls are slow both out and in. why? are you…ok. I will. love you too.”
jules just followed behind this new…jesse…as she lead her back toward the music room. she felt like she was being lead somewhere really important but that was ridiculous….it was just a dusty little…
“can I ask you something?”
jules felt her face flush as jesse turned around to face her…
“oh, never mind.”
jesse opened the door to the music room and jules was sure she could see jack sitting behind one of the control boards laughing with a couple of other guys.
“jules! I see you met my troublemaker sister, jessica!”
“you’re…..jules? that julie! ha!”
jules laughed and they all got behind the control board and started putting headphones on to hear what was up next….
jules heard the opening guitar of “like the way I do” by melissa etheridge and just started laughing. jesse joined her and they grabbed hands and continued cracking up.
“baby, need I remind you that before we met at that dance with melissa etheridge…
jesse couldn’t control her laughter. this joke always got her. they were so young and naive and free
“I had met abby. it’s funny, we did the same nickname thing right away, the three of us, if you remember correctly, before abby finally landed bobby, were inseparable.”
“i think she’s hot for you. I always did.”
“oh my god! Abigail Willison? haha! nope. she does not have the hots for me! You know she went to college for her MRS.”
“you are in denial, my hotness, my super hotness…”
they both fell into the bed laughing and touching and kissing while jules’ latest christmas mix played in the living room where they were supposed to be trimming the tree.
“i don’t know if my roommate is here….but, I want you to come in….to my….room….”
jules could barely breathe from their kissing in the lobby of the dorm and she was scared that she was feeling too….
jesse leaned her against her dorm room door and started kissing her again. she started feeling like she was falling backwa…..
“what the hell abby! I could have fallen backwa…..”
“I heard something at the door, what was I supposed to do? Just sit here in the dark wondering what those noises were?”
jesse chuckled at this and reached out her hand that had to have smelled like jules’ hair and skin by now.
jules wasn’t sure how long she had been crying in bed. when she zombied out of their bedroom she heard activity in the kitchen and walked toward it. jack is sitting at their kitchen table silently crying with his face in his hands. her mom is just looking out into the backyard as if searching for something or someone. neither of them look toward her as she slips into a kitchen chair, limp.
she puts her hand on jack’s left arm and he leans into it. her mom continues to stare out the window and down into the backyard.
“mom, what are you looki…”
“jules. jules, we have to clean the pavement out there. and,” at this she turns to face her daughter, her eyes weary and red from tears, “please sit down I need to tell you something….”
jules just then thinks of shutter and how pent up their pup must feel trapped on the second floor with them all this time since…
“sweetheart, it’s about shutter…”
